A Nice Balatro Run

Balatro was a good pickup for this past holiday break, I've spent a lot of time gaming with it. This morning's win was quite fun with a strategy I haven't gotten to work, which was 3-of-a-kind.
Been making good use of the new machine. Logged four hours of BG3 yesterday and another hour today. I switched for a while to Rocket League which I am very rusty at but which is still great fun.
Now to do some chores and projects.
Proton is rad
I have discovered Proton and Steam for playing games in Linux. Proton is a new piece of software that enables me to play Windows games on Linux.
I just played some Marvel Snap and am installing Stardew Valley now, an old time favorite.
I don't plan to go too crazy. But given that I just began my winter holiday, a few more distractions on my laptop seems fun.
Go First Dice
"Go First Dice" are a set of dice that allows some number of players to each roll a different single die (picked arbitrarily from the set) and the following conditions hold:
- There will never be ties.
- Each possible ordering of the players (determined by highest result, next highest result, etc) has a mathematically equal chance of occurring.
- The above conditions hold for every subset of the whole set.
They found a set of 4-dice which works, but have yet to find a set that is fair for groups of 5 or more players. Fascinating math discussions, even if I only understand 2/3rds of it.
Noclip about Black & White
I never played Black & White but I know a lot about it. My not playing it was a byproduct of not having a computer able to play it and then getting distracted with other things. But I remember reading and hearing a lot about it.
This was a fascinating insight into the game and its development.
With news of Google Stadia's imminent shutdown, a game dev mourns on Reddit
He and the team had spent 4 months working on getting their game successfully ported to Stadia and were just about to finish the process. Just brutal.
[Disclosure: Out of an abundance of caution, I'll disclose I work for another game company, Wizards of the Coast. We are not in any way directly tied to this story, but given that it is in the gaming sphere, I felt it prudent to call this out.]
Why we have Google trust issues with new things
The shockingly large graveyard of Google's projects sounds like it might grow larger with rumors floating of Stadia's demise coming soon. And this is why we have trust issues with big G. Why should I invest in new Google projects if they're just going to kill them? We have no guarantee on it and there is far too much evidence to make me believe a new project is going to be long lived.
I didn't play much Starcraft 2, but I have huge nostalgia for Starcraft 1. And this was an interesting watch.
A look at very early computer games for business simulation
A fascinating look at some of the very early (1950s) mainframe computer games used for execs and college students to study business models.
