"How to be a Druid or are you already one?"
The algorithm suggested this video from a person with druidic beliefs discussing them, and of course I was curious to check it out. He seems like a nice old man and speaks to his feelings and insight, but it is a fairly surface level conversation.
My favorite Beatboxer
Granted, I am far from an expert. But Vahtang jumped up the list when I started seeing his videos on social media.
Taskmaster Series 19 lineup announcement
I am very excited for the new season, and think Jason Manzoukas' chaos gremlin energy is going to be hilarious and amazing on Taskmaster.
This morning's work music
I don't always go for lo-fi music. I actually have a few go-to videos but this morning I felt I needed something more chill.
A "no phone" roadtrip
This is a real heartwarming video about a roadtrip between a father and a daughter, who vow not to use their phones during the trip. It's cute seeing the re-adjustment to the old days way of roadtripping, but the dynamic between them is something truly special.
What an amazing resource it is to have Daniel Naroditsky, one of the best grandmasters in the world, making YouTube videos.
Dryer Repair is shockingly easy
The dryer began making a weird noise last week. Katie and I did some research and determined we think we could save some money on a repairman and try to fix it ourselves. Shout out to the guy in the embedded video, showing how straightforward it is.
We ordered a repair kit on Amazon and tonight I began disassembling the dryer.

However, before I even get the drum out, I noticed there was something weird sticking out of the side of the blower. I give it a tug and sure enough, out comes a dryer sheet.
I decide, you know what? I'm going to gamble. I bet that was the noise and I don't need to replace all the rollers etc.
We get the vacuum and I clean everything I can get to, remove extra lent from the blower channel, etc. And then I reassemble the dryer and sure enough, it works like a charm.

$0 spent. (I mean, aside from the repair kit we bought. But we can return it. Or hold onto it for when we really do need to replace parts for the dryer.)
Congrats Tom Scott
Congrats and major kudos to Tom Scott, ten years with weekly uploads is incredibly impressive. I'm glad he indulged at the end, and I'll be enjoying the other things he works on.
4 days to claim the most US states
I've seen this channel's videos on my feed for a while, and I haven't ever watched. But today I decided to check this one out.
I'm a sucker for travel shows, though I never really got into the Amazing Race now that I think about it. But in any case, I was drawn in by this being more than just racing from state to state, there's an entire game overlayed on what they're doing involving claiming states by doing challenges, and even a "battle" mechanic where someone's claimed state can be taken over by the other team.
WWJD - What Would Jimmy Do
YouTuber goes to every Margaritaville in America and Canada and enters an existential fugue questioning the meaning of life and - no, just kidding. He just makes jokes and complains about all the fried food. It's an hour long but surprisingly entertaining.
Visiting the Poorest Area of Appalachia
This reminds me a lot of my childhood. My father was from West Virginia, and his sister and mother lived in Charmco, WV. To me, as a child, it was "where grandma lived," but now as an adult I can see it as the extremely small town and the remnants of the coal industry.
When my Aunt decided to move out of the cabin she had lived in, I briefly considered trying to get my siblings or other people to go in and buy it as a vacation cabin. But the reality is I'd never visit it. I'd have to fly from Seattle to Charleston and then drive two hours to get to Charmco, which just isn't realistically something I would do, both for the travel requirements - but also because, well, it's in Appalachia. As this video highlights, it's a region in trouble.
Or, if not trouble, going through a dramatic shift.
Also, wow hearing the residents talk, transports me back with that unique twang and pacing.
Edit 12:50pm:
I will often post things without having finished them. This is one of those. Towards the end of the video it turns pretty clearly to the conservative politics, as well as some dog whistles for white supremacy etc. Unfortunate as I was enjoying the trip through the area.
Politically it also highlights the downside of income programs. People who get addicted to drugs and use that money to keep the addiction going.
The things I was most struck by as we see the wider issues of the region are the lack of... well, hope. So many of the young people leave, and those that remain end up trapped or addicted. Additionally they get on drugs because of coping with things, availability, and even just the simple social side of things - this is what the people they are around are doing.
The rural areas need a way to dig out, jobs to create opportunity, paths for more than just "I'm fixing engines because it's all I know to do."
Grandpa Amu the Carpenter
This YouTube channel is an example of why I love the Internet. This is some older asian man around the world who does various woodworking projects without any narration and just posts them online. Nothing mind blowing. Just simple.
David Letterman interviews President Zelenskyy
I haven't gotten to watch this yet, I likely will tomorrow. But without a doubt it is something worth sharing here for others to be aware of.
Feature Request: Customizable YouTube Player Buttons
I wish YouTube let me customize the buttons on its player. I really miss the "jump back" double tap on YouTube when I'm on the desktop. I know I can do it via the "j" button, but I'd love to have it be mouse clickable rather than requiring a keyboard stroke.
YouTuber shares the nitty gritty on his income from the channel
This was posted in October but I only just came across it:
I started Brick Experiment Channel in December 2017 and got accepted to YouTube Partner Program in June 2018. Now, October 2022, the total earnings are 664 thousand USD. That is 12500 USD per month. This is the money Google sends to my bank account, from which I pay taxes.
Brick Experiment Channel total: subscribers: 2.9 million video views: 705 million uploads: 65 total earnings: 664 000 USD avg earnings per month: 12 500 USD RPM: 0.94 Playback-based CPM: 3.20
So, over five years, it has averaged out to $132,800 a year, though the actualities of that number are likely more of an exponential pay out curve rather than linear.
Casey Neistat has moved back to New York
I doubt this means the daily VLOG is back, but I enjoyed this video. It's a good think about what is home, what it means, and more. I especially appreciated his friend's line about "If you aren't changing, you're not pushing yourself hard enough."
I definitely feel that.
