In a mood

I would expect today to be a light blogging day, at least from an outward link perspective.

I've woken up with a feeling of malaise and general blahness to the world. I was listening to the Offline podcast this morning and I found myself getting... angry. And not in a rational way. The guest is talking about the danger TikTok presents, something which has been discussed a great deal online, but I found the tone of the conversation and the angle taken to just chafe. Not that I am a TikTok proponent or fan, I use it, but my total usage in a week is probably on the order of... an hour? Maybe two? In any case, I am not sure what it is this morning, but I may eschew my normal level of link and news consumption to instead focus on my own projects and writing.

I'm not sure if this is related, but I had a real difficult time with the weekend's temporality. I kept thinking I had more weekend left. On Saturday I felt like it was Friday. And on Sunday I felt, until quite late in the day, that I had another day to go.

That's the morning outlook for the day, we'll see how the day goes.

"The Hunt for El Chapo"

Indelibly through this article is the US' pressure and presence in this hunt. There is a line in here which was a reminder about America's history on this continent, in discussion about the US' desire to be more directly involved:

When young Mexican officers study their nation’s military history, the curriculum dwells, inescapably, on the many invasions by the United States; the prospect of an overbearing American law-enforcement presence south of the border offended many Mexicans’ sense of sovereignty.

"If Money Doesn't Make You Happy Then You Probably Aren't Spending It Right"

I came across this paper by this video on Ali Abdaal's YouTube channel and I held off posting about it, wanting to do my own write up on it. I like Ali's channel and find his videos much further on the info side of the infotainment scale, but I thought I would do it better. However, digging into the paper, it's just them distilling the research of others - which Ali then distills even further and the truth is - I think he did a fantastic job and encourage you to watch his video, even with the ad placement in the middle of the video.

However, as you'll note, I've linked the actual paper itself in case you want to go through and read it yourself. I might still write a larger post, as I think there is something to be said about a mental shift for healthy and proper budgeting to put happiness closer to the front - not in a hedonistic sense, but just in the mentality with which you approach budgeting. But I don't have that post figured out yet. Look for that sometime later.

From the paper's Abstract:

The relationship between money and happiness is surprisingly weak, which may stem in part from the way people spend it. Drawing on empirical research, we propose eight principles designed to help consumers get more happiness for their money. Specifically, we suggest that consumers should (1) buy more experiences and fewer material goods; (2) use their money to benefit others rather than themselves; (3) buy many small pleasures rather than fewer large ones; (4) eschew extended warranties and other forms of overpriced insurance; (5) delay consumption; (6) consider how peripheral features of their purchases may affect their day-to-day lives; (7) beware of comparison shopping; and (8) pay close attention to the happiness of others.

Was in bed 45 min. ago. Elwood whined so we went out. We came back in and rather than back to bed, I stay up just in case he's got an upset tummy. Well, I've been in my chair 45 minutes because he has laid down at my feet & curled his paw over my foot. I love this dog so much.
