"Homeless statistics are flawed. Will Seattle’s new way to count help?"

For years, advocates have pushed the government to improve the annual count by broadening the official definition of homelessness and adopting new methods to count unsheltered populations. There are a number of proposals circulating. Until recently they have mostly been theoretical. Then, earlier this year in Seattle, the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) decided to field-test a new method, which combined policy wonks and street organizers to capture populations that had been missed in HUD’s Point-In-Time (PIT) count, a key component of the federal government’s homeless population estimate.

“Given this monumental task, it is likely that communities do not find every single person experiencing homelessness, but we are confident they identify most people, and this consistent counting effort allows an analysis of trends from year to year that help us gauge whether homelessness is rising or falling across the country,” Goodloe said. “The PIT count data is the only data source that collects data on our unsheltered population across the entire country.”

Black man harassed by white woman in Seattle

So disappointing. I first heard about the video when an acquaintance of mine online tweeted about as proof why they wouldn't move to Seattle.

Katie and I have long discussed the comparatively low number of black people in Seattle compared to growing up in the South. And I've written past posts highlighting some of the region's history which actively discouraged diversity.

We still have a long way to go.

"The Seattle Times Company launches The Ticket, a calendar and ticketing site for the Puget Sound region"

Several notable bits here:

First, they hire an editor from The Stranger to run it. Second, that it is a calendar and ticketing service.

The Seattle Times Company is launching a new regionwide calendar and ticketing platform on August 18th called The Ticket. Powered and promoted by The Seattle Times, The Ticket is a lively, opinionated entertainment website covering all the exciting events and things to do in Seattle and the Puget Sound region.

The site is created by the Seattle Times Content Studio and will be led by Chase Burns, formerly an editor at The Stranger. With his experience as a successful entertainment reporter and editor in Seattle, Burns is perfectly positioned to help The Seattle Times Company create a compelling, visionary entertainment website for the Seattle area. He has assembled a team of experienced local writers, reporters and videographers to help him create The Ticket.

[...]

The Ticket will include event listings and planners featuring things to do across five key regions in Seattle. Readers can access content through weekly email newsletters, social media channels and navigation from seattletimes.com.

The Seattle Heat wave has arrived. Katie and I spent some time last night prepping for it. We don't (yet) have AC in the house, so we make use of portable AC units. We set one up in the bedroom for sleeping, and the other goes into the office. Since they are right across from each other, we hang a blanket in the hall to create a faux door, and we leave the two rooms connected.

We lose a bit of the air but it allows us to be connected at home, and lets the dogs have a bit more space to roam rather than being locked in the bedroom.

I do hate the portable AC units and every year we swear it's the year we get central AC. Then something else comes up (it was the garage roof this year.) We'll see if next year is the year (spoilers: it will be.)

A great team photo for the Reign last night. I just love Jess Fishlock's (far right) huge grin. The player hunched next to her is Kim Little who has recently returned to the team on loan. She was a member of the original squad and those two played together originally. Jess looks like her best friend has returned.

Reign went on to win 2-0 last night.

Saw a car with a "I love my Husky Son and Cougar Daughter" license plate wrapper. If you had no context for the local colleges, that certainly sends a different message.

The verdict is in: No one pandemics like Seattle

The news this past week that Seattle has become the "most vaccinated city" — the first of the 30 largest U.S. metros to reach 70% fully vaxxed — is just the capper to a curious 16-month odyssey. We started out as Ground Zero for an infectious disease outbreak, but then watched as it took off and slammed everywhere else much harder than it ever did here.

As exciting as that is, this is the most exciting for me:

On Friday, Seattle reported just four new cases. How have we, mostly, escaped?

The article then goes to ask if the Seattle Freeze way of life helped us beat the pandemic because we all hate gathering in groups already.

Reddit animation that shows the flow of equal temperature in Europe

As I watched I couldn't help notice that Seattle always remained in the band. I love this city.

Ten years ago I visited Seattle for the first time

It was March 1st, 2011 that my wife and I first visited Seattle after flying across the country. Little did we know that we'd be living here just over 9 months later.
