Kris Nova, founder of Hachyderm & Nivenly died
I doubt anyone who comes across my blog will know who Kris is. She founded hachyderm, my Mastodon instance. She had a big personality and big thoughts about technology, social justice, and making the world better.
Based on posts by others, she died during a rock climbing accident.
Today is a sad day.
Kevin Mitnick, Notorious Early-days Hacker, has died of Pancreatic Cancer
Kevin David Mitnick, 59, died peacefully on Sunday, July 16, 2023, after valiantly battling pancreatic cancer for more than a year. Kevin is survived by his beloved wife, Kimberley Mitnick, who remained by his side throughout their 14-month ordeal. Kimberley is pregnant with their first child. Kevin was ecstatic about this new chapter in his and Kimberley's life together, which has now been sadly cut short.
From his Wiki page:

He later ran the security firm Mitnick Security Consulting, LLC. He was also the Chief Hacking Officer and part owner of the security awareness training company KnowBe4, as well as an active advisory board member at Zimperium, a firm that develops a mobile intrusion prevention system.
Mitnick died on July 16, 2023 after a 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer, while his wife Kimberley was pregnant with his first child.
Forever one of the greats, farewell Pelé
Few names carry the same weight as Pelé, the Brazilian legend. While it is arguable if he is the greatest ever now, it is unquestionable that he remains one of the players who forever changed the game and raised its visibility around the world.
I've had the chance to go to Brazil twice, both times to São Paulo. On the first of those trips I was able to visit the "Museo de Futbol" in São Paulo which was virtually hosted by Pelé.

Sadly, I don't have a good photo from inside. My phone at the time only had a so-so camera. I have a blurry photo of me posing in front of the virtual Pelé, but it is not worth sharing. I keep it purely to add to the memory of that visit.
That said, it is still one of my all-time favorite travel memories, to stand in what almost felt like a holy place in a country that loves the beautiful game, hosted by the hero of soccer for the country.
Obigrado Pelé.
Comedian Gallagher dies at 76
Admittedly the peak of his comedy presence was when I was on the young side. The most notable thing I can contribute here is that I went to middle school with his daughter. I didn't know her, but she was at school the same time as me.
How Donald Rumsfeld Deserves to Be Remembered
But Rumsfeld was the chief advocate of every disaster in the years after September 11. Wherever the United States government contemplated a wrong turn, Rumsfeld was there first with his hard smile—squinting, mocking the cautious, shoving his country deeper into a hole. His fatal judgment was equaled only by his absolute self-assurance. He lacked the courage to doubt himself. He lacked the wisdom to change his mind.
Fuck. That. Guy.
