There was a diplomatic network between Australia, India, Japan and the United States
The "Quadrilateral Security Dialogue" originally launched in 2007, it fell apart in 2008 when Australia removed itself. It was reborn in 2017 under Trump for purposes of countering China's growing influence.
I don't recall hearing about it before, it came up in an article discussing the U.S.-India relations, so I went and looked it up.
Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft lands successfully on the moon
Congratulations India, what a huge moment. An exciting event for the future of space exploration.
India and Russia's very different (so far) moon missions
Russia's Luna-25 crashed into the moon last night.
Russia's unmanned Luna-25 spacecraft has crashed into the Moon after spinning out of control, officials say.
It was Russia's first Moon mission in almost 50 years.
The craft was due to be the first ever to land on the Moon's south pole, but failed after encountering problems as it moved into its pre-landing orbit.
Meanwhile, India's Chandrayaan-3 completed it's final lunar orbit.
Vikram, which carries a rover in its belly, is due to land near the south pole on 23 August.
The lander detached from the propulsion module, which carried it close to the Moon, on Thursday.
The black-and-white images show close-ups of rocks and craters on the Moon's surface. One of the photographs shows the propulsion module too.
If successful, India will be the fourth country to achieve a moon landing with USA, USSR and China.
Indian Space Mission Enters Moon's Orbit
A fantastic accomplishment, especially when you consider the cost for the mission was less than $75 million!
Experts say India can keep costs low by copying and adapting existing space technology, and thanks to an abundance of highly skilled engineers who earn a fraction of their foreign counterparts’ wages.
The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has taken much longer to reach the moon than the manned Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s, which arrived in a matter of days.
The Indian rocket used is much less powerful than the United States’ Saturn V and instead the probe orbited Earth five or six times elliptically to gain speed, before being sent on a month-long lunar trajectory.
If the landing is successful the rover will roll off Vikram and explore the nearby lunar area, gathering images to be sent back to Earth for analysis.
The rover has a mission life of one lunar day or 14 Earth days.
50 killed, many more trapped, after trains derail in India
Two passenger trains derailed Friday in India, killing at least 50 people and trapping hundreds of others inside more than a dozen damaged rail cars, officials said.
About 400 people were taken to hospitals after the accident, which happened in eastern India, about 220 kilometers (137 miles) southwest of Kolkata, officials said. The cause was under investigation.
Ten to 12 coaches of one train derailed, and debris from some of the mangled coaches fell onto a nearby track, said Amitabh Sharma, a railroad ministry spokesperson.
The debris was hit by another passenger train coming from the opposite direction, and up to three coaches of the second train also derailed, Sharma said.
"The people resurrecting India's ancient fruit trees"
It can take an entire village to grow a new-age garden. That's what 42-year-old Shyju Machathi, a policeman living in Kannapuram in the Southern Indian state of Kerala, found out when his town was declared an "Indigenous Mango Heritage Area" by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board in 2020.
The honour came after the villagers had got together to grow over 200 indigenous species of mangoes, sourced from surrounding towns and villages, preserving diverse varieties that were in danger of dying out.
The technique that made it possible, Machathi says, is the age-old art of grafting. He started experimenting with the technique in July 2016, despite no formal training in farming, after an unfortunate incident shook the village of Kannapuram.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledges to make India a developed country in 25 years"
Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to raise millions out of poverty and turn India into a developed country in the next quarter-century as he marked 75 years since independence from British rule.
Only 29 silent Indian films remain of over 1,300
I'm ashamed to admit how extreme my America-centrist view is in regards to film, I had never really considered the silent film era of other cultures and countries. A very interesting read about a very sad loss of creative art creations.
At 85, Virchand Dharamsey should be leading the retired life, but he is hard at work, digging deep for the hidden and unknown.
For the past few years, the Mumbai-based researcher has been writing a book tentatively titled Archaeology of Early Indian Cinema with Iyesha Geeth Abbas, a colleague from Kerala. Covering the period between 1895 and 1945, the project is as noble as it is challenging, given the shortage of reliable information on the earliest years of Indian cinema.
Just over 1,300 silent movies were made in India in the first three decades of the last century. By 1931, India had produced its first sound film, Alam Ara, and by 1934, the "talkies" had taken over the screens. But only 29 of the silent films made in India survive.
