« Previous Day Next Day »

I ended up crashing and crawling into bed around 7:30 last night. I knew it was early and I was worried I'd wake up at midnight or 1 and not be able to fall asleep, but my body was just exhausted and I decided to risk it.

The gamble paid off. I quickly fell asleep and even though I did wake up once during the night, I was able to immediately fall back asleep. Nine hours and forty-ish minutes, with a sleep score of 76 from my smartwatch.

I still feel some soreness from working the event, but I feel much better rested and ready to take on the day.

Reddit Blackout - Day 1

The Reddit blackout is upon us... what do we do?

Reddit had truly become the frontpage of the Internet and I am certain if I looked through access logs, I regularly visit it double-digit times daily.

Thankfully, for me, I have a robust RSS feed which feeds me hundreds of articles each day. It's not the same as Reddit, but it wasn't curated to be.

I'll be turning more to Mastodon to see what gets shared on my feed, and perhaps I'll just log off a bit more.

I am about to start tackling my collection management project, so that will take up a fair bit of time as well.

Edit: According to The Verge, over 6,000 subreddits have joined the protest.

"'Genocidal': Transgender people begin to flee states with anti-LGBTQ laws"

As a transgender kid in a conservative region, Susan said Elsa could feel the growing tensions concerning people like her – she told her parents to "just let them hurt me," instead of moving out of state.

"It just kind of reveals how much damage all this causes to trans people, to their families, to people that support them, to people that haven't even figured out who they are yet," said Brian.

Elsa's family has since moved to Washington and said LGBTQ acceptance in the community has been like day-and-night between the two states, Susan said.

Manny Santiago, the executive director of the Washington State LGBTQ Commission, said it's a bittersweet feeling to know that the state has become a safe space for families with LGBTQ members, while others implement restrictions.

Thousands of fish washed up on some Texas beaches

When asked what contributed to the fish deaths, Quintana Beach County Park officials said it was a "perfect storm" of factors.

First, warm water is not ideal for fish. It tends to hold less oxygen. That is especially true in shallow water, which heats up quicker. So, a school of fish likely found themselves deprived of oxygen as they swam though shallow waters in the summertime.

Another problem was that seas near county beaches were quite calm over the past few weeks, meaning there were few waves and winds to help redistribute oxygen in the water.

Over the past few days, the skies above the the beaches were cloudy. That is an issue for phytoplankton, which help produce oxygen in the water by using photosynthesis. That process is driven by sunlight. So, the less they are exposed to the sun by way of overcast, the less oxygen phytoplankton produce.

"Instant Pot and Pyrex Maker Instant Brands Files for Bankruptcy"

Instant Brands, maker of the Instant Pot pressure cooker and Pyrex glassware, filed for bankruptcy on Monday after high interest rates and waning access to credit hit its cash position and made its debts unsustainable.

The company listed estimated assets and liabilities of as much as $1 billion in a bankruptcy petition filed in Texas. The Chapter 11 filing allows Instant Brands to keep operating while it seeks approval of a plan to repay creditors.

The company is slated to receive around $133 million in debtor-in-possession financing to fund itself through the bankruptcy process, the company said in a statement.

"After successfully navigating the Covid-19 pandemic and the global supply chain crisis, we continue to face additional global macroeconomic and geopolitical challenges that have affected our business," Ben Gadbois, the company's president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

"Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Legal Team Plagued by Infighting, Backstabbing"

Right up until the day Donald Trump's federal indictment was unsealed, the legal team tasked with defending him was engaged in petty internal feuds — including fights over TV appearances, accusations of disloyalty, and even a so-called "coup," three people familiar with the situation, as well as others on or close to Trump's legal defense, tell Rolling Stone.
